The kids that hung the nooses got way to lenient punishment and for the kids that started the fight, it was just a little harsh. But honestly, even if you consider the nooses a threat to kill, it's nowhere near as bad as actually attacking someone.
It's always been my opinion that if someone starts a fight with me, I'll defend myself as if they are trying to kill me. But even without that mentality, starting a fight is a step or two beyond threat. It calls for harsher punishment.
People are making this more of a race issue than it probably was. Not saying the punishments were partially influenced by race but they also aren't completely influenced by race like some seem to want to make it out to be.
You have to have a healthy amount of skepticism any time political figures get behind a cause. I'm sure there are some good intentions here. But it doesn't hurt that they're getting face time on TV, either. No doubt there's some profiteering going on here.
What I found interesting in the AP story was that folks in Jena feel that this incident has been overblown -- whites and blacks. Even with all their problems, people in the deep South are slow to change and just want to be left alone.
